Barnsley sign Arsenal midfielder Frimpong

Barnsley have confirmed the signing of Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old made 16 first-team appearances during his time at the Emirates Stadium and had spells on loan at Wolves, Charlton Athletic and Fulham.

Despite playing a key role in Arsenal s successful 2009 FA Youth Cup campaign, Frimpong found opportunities hard to come by and will hope his move to Oakwell will afford him more game time.

Born in Ghana, Frimpong has been capped once by his country, featuring in a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Sudan in March 2013.

Barnsley currently sit 23rd in the Championship and Frimpong is determined to help keep the club in the second tier.

I m really excited to be here, Frimpong told the club s official website. Ever…

Van Gaal undaunted by weight of history

From the moment he was appointed Manchester United boss, it was clear Louis van Gaal would be doing things differently to his predecessor.

His first words told their own story: This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I m sure we will make history.

It was a bold declaration, one that was a welcome move away from the usual media speak that accompanies such statements.

Most striking, though, was how greatly Van Gaal s words differed from those often uttered by the beleaguered some would say hapless man he replaced.

Indeed, when David Moyes first spoke to the press upon his introduction, he had this to say: I’m inexperienced in a lot of things and there were some brilliant managers who could have quite easily taken this role but the…

Potter: James ´in a good place´ after missing World Cup

Graham Potter says Reece James is in a good place again after the brutal experience of missing England s World Cup campaign.

Full-back James was left out of Gareth Southgate s 26-man squad for Qatar 2022, where England lost to France in the quarter-finals, due to a knee injury.

The 23-year-old has not played since sustaining the injury against Milan on October 11, but he returned to training at the start of December.

Potter acknowledged it has been a difficult period for James, who is set to feature against Bournemouth on Tuesday as Chelsea make their return to Premier League action.

It was a World Cup and they come around every four years. So when you’re young, the perspective is not so easy to get, Potter said.

You are young and you want to …

Wembley pilgrimage ´an honour´ for Anglophile Lopetegui

Spain head coach Julen Lopetegui is a self-confessed English football obsessive who hopes to make his mark at Wembley on Tuesday.

Former Porto boss Lopetegui has enjoyed a successful start to his reign with the national team, earning 10 points from four World Cup qualifiers following a 2-0 friendly win over Belgium on debut.

The 2010 world champions face another tricky non-competitive task on the road this week against an England side who boast an identical record in qualification, having dispatched Scotland 3-0 on Friday.

Spain were 4-0 winners over Macedonia 24 hours later and Lopetegui is relishing a match against a nation whose football culture fascinates him, despite their recent woeful form at major tournaments.

It s an honour for us to come here a…

Gutierrez gets all-clear from cancer

Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez revealed on Monday that he has been given the all-clear after receiving cancer treatment.

Gutierrez shocked the football world in September when he announced he was undergoing treatment for testicular cancer in his native Argentina.

The 31-year-old had his left testicle removed as a result.

But Gutierrez announced via Twitter that he has been released from hospital.

Today I was given a medical discharge. Thank you very much to all who accompanied me at this time, especially my family, my parents, brothers, godmother and friends, he posted.

Newcastle also used Twitter to show their support for the Argentinean.

The Premier League club posted: Everyone at #NUFC is delighted to share the news that @elg…

Koeman adamant that Schneiderlin will stay put

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is adamant that he will be able to keep hold of midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin this January, .

The France international has been constantly linked with a move away from St Mary’s since not being allowed to leave in the summer, like so many of his former teammates did.

North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are both keen to secure the services of the 25 year old, but his manager is certain that the club will not sell any of their players when the transfer window reopens.

Schneiderlin, who signed for Saints in the summer of 2008, has made fifteen appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring three times.

He has been capped for his country seven times, having made his international debut in an…

AC Milan 0-0 Napoli: The Result Reflects the Game

AC Milan welcomed Napoli to San Siro in round 32 of the 2017/18 Serie A season. Gennaro Gattuso’s team aim to finish inside top six and qualify for Europe, and they need every point they can get in that push. The same can be said of Napoli, even more so, as they strive to keep the pressure on Juventus and be in a position to take advantage of any potential mistake the Old Lady may make. Now, when Juventus are out of the Champions League, such opportunities aren’t likely to come often.

The teams

Both managers arranged their teams in the 4-3-3 formation.

Gattuso went with Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal, the centre-back duo of Cristian Zapata and Mateo Musacchio flanked by Davide Calabria and Ricardo Rodriguez. Lucas Biglia, Franck Kessie and Giacomo Bonaventura formed …

Adios, Andres – The greatest player in Spain´s history

Like most major events to do with Barcelona, Andres Iniesta s Copa del Rey final farewell was best summed up by Lionel Messi.

They had combined for the goal of the game. Iniesta glided forward, fed Messi, collected his return pass, dummied exquisitely past David Soria and fired home. After the jumping fist pump and the player huddle came Messi s tribute: eyes closed, he hugged his long-time team-mate, the image a silent reflection of the headline that would follow in AS the next day: Iniesta, don t go! .

Messi knew, though. The news was confirmed on Friday, but it comes as no surprise: Iniesta will leave Barcelona at the end of the season, after 22 years at the club. He is expected to head to China, becoming the crowning jewel in the nation s star-studded Super League,…

Inter v AC Milan: Grand old rivalry resumes as new money flows in

Juventus surgical takedown of Barcelona on Tuesday proved beyond any doubt that Serie A has a high-class side capable of mixing with and besting Europe s elite.

For Inter and AC Milan, who clash in the Derby della Madonnina on Saturday, it must have felt particularly cold to be on the outside looking in.

Inter were the last Italian club to hoist Europe s biggest trophy in 2010, when Jose Mourinho s all-conquering side became the only team in the country s history to complete the Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League treble.

Mourinho left – or more accurately stayed at the Santiago Bernabeu following the final victory over Bayern Munich – to lead Real Madrid, and Inter have never been the same. Stefano Pioli is their ninth head coach since then and would …

Quaresma wage demands stop Toronto move

According to a recent report from ESPN, Ricardo Quaresma’s wage demands have led to Toronto FC going off the idea of signing him. The 35 year old appeared to be set for one final big payday over in Major League Soccer in North America, but it seems like he may have taken things one step too far. The Portuguese star, who helped lead Portugal to Euro 2016 success just a few years ago, has been with Besiktas since back in 2015. He’s arguably best known for his two spells with Porto, although he also spent time with Sporting Lisbon, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea.

Quaresma has been at the heart of Portuguese football for what feels like forever, and as a result, there are often many eyes on what he’s going to do next. Alas, even with his popularity, it seems like Toronto …
