From Griezmann to Boateng – Abidal´s Barcelona signings graded

Eric Abidal is the latest high-profile casualty at Barcelona as the fallout from their humiliating 8-2 Champions League elimination by Bayern Munich continues.

The Frenchman, a former Barca player, had been sporting director for two years and was axed on Tuesday, 24 hours on from Quique Setien losing his job as head coach.

While many expressed sympathy for Setien s situation on Monday given he was only in the job for seven months, it s unlikely Abidal will be afforded the same understanding.

Although Barca won LaLiga in 2018-19, their transfer dealings over the past two years – and, to be fair, before Abidal assumed the sporting director role – have been a regular source of criticism.

Following Abidal s departure, we graded all of the players brought …

Dundee’s climate change claim mocked by rivals after postponements

Dundee United have trolled their next-door neighbours after Dundee blamed climate change for a raft of postponements.

Dundee club secretary Eric Drysdale pointed to the impact of global weather issues after their cinch Premiership encounter with Rangers was postponed on Wednesday night for a second time.

United used their official X account to take a light-hearted dig at their city rivals as they posted photographs of Jim Goodwin and his squad training on their pitch ahead of their cinch Championship encounter with Morton at a sunny Tannadice.

Guardiola: Pochettino an excellent manager despite lack of trophies

Pep Guardiola has insisted a lack of trophies does not stop Mauricio Pochettino from being considered among the world s top managers.

Paris Saint-Germain boss Pochettino has been widely tipped as the leading contender to take over at Manchester United following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer s sacking on Sunday.

Pochettino arrived at the Parc des Princes in January and missed out on Ligue 1 and Champions League success in his first half-season in charge.

However, the Argentinian has lifted the Trophee des Champions and Coupe de France this year – his first cup triumphs following five trophyless years with Tottenham.

With speculation mounting that Pochettino is interested in the United job, Guardiola has defended the ex-Espanyol and Southampton coach s major troph…

Reid nearing Hammers exit

Winston Reid appears to be edging closer to a move away from West Ham United with his wage demands making a January sale almost certain, .

The centre back has been one on several key performers in an impressive start for Sam Allardyce’s side, who currently sit fourth in the Premier League after taking twenty-six points from their opening fifteen games – a tally they didn’t reach until February last season.

His contract is set to expire at the end of the season, so the Hammers may well cash in when the transfer window reopens with both Arsenal and Liverpool interested in securing his services.

Since arriving at Upton Park from Danish Superliga side FC Midtjylland in the summer of 2010, the New Zealand has made one hundred and fourteen appearances in all …

Man Utd striker Cavani steps up recovery but still a doubt for Chelsea clash

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani spent the international break in Uruguay stepping up his recovery, but he remains a doubt to feature against Chelsea on Sunday.

A tendon problem has prevented Cavani from featuring for United since a substitute appearance in the Red Devils 2-2 draw with Atalanta on November 2, missing the losses to Manchester City and Watford that spelled the end of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer s reign, as well as the most recent victory over Villarreal.

The 34-year-old also missed out on the chance to represent his country, with Uruguay slipping to defeat against Argentina and Bolivia, putting their World Cup qualification hopes in jeopardy and leading to the sacking of Oscar Tabarez as head coach after 15 years in the role.

Spurs eye Drinkwater deal

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to swoop for Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater,.

The North London side are still looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the closing of the transfer window and would be keen too bring in the England international, who was one of many stars for the Foxes as they romped to the Premier League title last season.

Leicester are keen to tie Drinkwater down to a new deal at the King Power Stadium having already lost fellow midfielder N’Golo Kante to Chelsea, though Sprs are hoping a deal can be concluded.

Drinkwater moved to the East Midlands outfit from Manchester United in January 2012 and has since racked up one hundred and seventy-seven appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring thirteen goals.

Del Bosque heaps praise on ´elegant´ Loew

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has applauded Joachim Loew for his elegant approach to leading Germany back among the international elite.

The 52-year-old originally assumed the role of assistant under Jurgen Klinsmann between 2004 and 2006, but was promoted to head coach after the World Cup six years ago.

He subsequently led Germany to a runners-up place at Euro 2008 and secured a third-placed finish in South Africa.

Del Bosque, who could face Loew in a second consecutive European final in Poland and Ukraine, was lost for superlatives when describing his opponent, and sees no reason why he could not go on to coach either Barcelona or Real Madrid one day should the opportunity arise.

He is an elegant man who represents his country very well, the Spaniar…

Arsenal beat treble-winners Manchester City on penalties to win Community Shield

Arsenal took home the first piece of silverware of the new season as they beat treble-winners Manchester City on penalties to lift the Community Shield.

Substitute Cole Palmer appeared to have won it for City in normal time after a fine curling finish, only for an unfortunate last-gasp Manuel Akanji own goal to earn Arsenal a 1-1 draw and take the game to a shoot-out.

The Gunners scored all of their spot-kicks while Kevin De Bruyne fired against the bar and Champions League final match-winner Rodri’s poor effort was saved by Aaron Ramsdale.

Matuszczyk unsure over Szczesny return

Poland midfielder Adam Matuszczyk has empathised with Franciszek Smuda as his coach ponders whether to recall Wojciech Szczesny.

Przemyslaw Tyton became an instant hero when he came off the bench and saved the penalty that had been conceded by Szczesny in their opening Euro 2012 clash against Greece, which finished 1-1.

But the Arsenal goalkeeper, who started the tournament as first choice, is back from his ban for the game against Michal Bilek s Czech Republic, leaving Smuda with a difficult decision to make.

We have two very good goalkeepers, Wojciech and Przemyslaw, Matuszczyk told reporters.

I am happy that I do not have to make the decision (about) who must be the number one.

Midfielder Rafal Murawski echoed his countryman s sentiments.<…
